PRIOR to BISHOP FRANCIS TURNER

Add.           "Ad Franc: Episc: Eliensem."
MS.           Longleat, Prior 28: 344 (copy).
Pub.           Lit. Works 728.
Turner's translation from Rochester to Ely on 16/26 July 1684 was almost certainly the occasion for this letter from one of the Somerset Scholars at St. John's College, to whom the bishop was official Visitor. The letter is preceded on the manuscript page by a poem by Isaac Longland (Lit. Works 1046).

PRIOR to BISHOP THOMAS SPRAT
[Cambridge, November 1684.] Latin.

MS.           Longleat, Prior 28: 340-41 (copy).
Pub.           Lit. Works 728-29.
This letter accompanied a Latin poem congratulating Sprat upon his consecration as Bishop of Rochester on 2/12 Nov. 1684 (Lit. Works 1046). In the manuscript, the address appears before the poem; the letter, which follows it, is headed "Epistola eodem tempore Missa."

PRIOR to [ARTHUR PRIOR]
[Cambridge, ?24 June/4 July 1685.]
Add.           "To my Uncle."
MS.           Longleat, Prior 10: c (copy).

The uncle P solicits here for financial assistance must be Arthur Prior, by whom P was fostered after the death of his father. Drift's placement of his transcript among P's letters dated 1685 to other members of his family suggests that the bill P enclosed covered his expenses at St. John's College for the quarter ending on Midsummer Day of that year.

Although Drift's transcript of this letter omits P's signature, it is preserved in a group of manuscripts that Drift labeled "Letters written by Mr: Prior." Drift's index to the volume containing his copy of this letter correctly identifies the addressee as P's cousin, not his aunt of the same name.
